Remember to clean and lubricate the blades during clipping — approximately every 15 to 20 minutes — to prevent the clipper from overheating (contact with hot metal can cause the horse to react sharply).
Also, remove the blades regularly from the clipper head to clean them with the brush; they will cut much more efficiently as a result. Wipe the upper blade to avoid depositing cut hair back onto the horse as you continue clipping.

Have your clipper blades sharpened regularly — approximately every 5 to 6 clips, and more often if your horses have a "difficult" coat (long, thick, dirty, or sticky). For the best results, sending them back to the manufacturer is a more reliable option than your local knife sharpener.

Clean combs after each use by washing with soapy water, then dry and oil them.
