Clean and lubricate the clipper blades during clipping, about every 10 minutes, to keep the clipper from overheating. Contact with hot metal can cause the horse to react violently.
Remove the blades from the clipper head frequently and brush away any buildup so they keep cutting cleanly.
Wipe the lower blade to avoid depositing clipped hair back onto the horse when you resume clipping.

Have the combs sharpened regularly — approximately every 5 to 6 clips, and more often if the horses have a challenging coat (long, thick, dirty, or sticky). For the best results, sending them back to the manufacturer is a more reliable option than a local knife sharpener.

Clean the blades after each use by washing them with soapy water, then dry and oil them.
