Clean and lubricate the clipper blades during clipping, about every 10 minutes, to keep the clippers from overheating. Contact with hot metal can cause a horse to react violently.
Also remove the blades from the clipper head regularly and brush away any buildup so they keep cutting well.

Have your clipper blades sharpened regularly — approximately every 5 to 6 clips, and more often if your horses have a "difficult" coat (long, thick, dirty, or sticky). For the best results, sending them back to the manufacturer is a more reliable option than your local knife sharpener.

Clean the clipper blades after each use by soaking them in soapy water. Let them dry, then oil them again.
