- As with all schooling aids, it is important not to set them too short — especially at the start of a session. The goal is not to restrict the horse, which would cause resistance, but to define a framework within which the horse can find its own balance freely.
- Running reins are also known as sliding reins. They are much longer than ordinary reins, running from the girth, through the bit rings, and back up to the rider's hands. The fixed attachment sits at the chest (or on either side of the saddle). The reins slide freely through the bit rings — either when the rider adjusts their length or when the horse moves its head.
- When properly fitted, they define the maximum height the neck can be raised — the point beyond which the head should not go. In fact, they are not "adjusted" in the conventional sense like ordinary reins; they only become taut when the horse raises its neck above a carefully chosen point. The head-neck angle must remain open — running reins are absolutely not meant to place the horse on the bit.
