- As with all auxiliary reins, it is important not to set them too short, especially at the start of a session. The aim is not to restrict the horse — which would cause resistance — but to define a framework within which the horse can find its balance freely.
- Running reins are also known as sliding reins. They are much longer than standard reins, running from the girth, through the bit rings, and back up into the rider's hand. The fixed attachment is at the breastplate (or on either side of the saddle). The reins therefore slide through the bit rings — either when the rider adjusts their length, or when the horse moves its head.
- When correctly fitted, they define the maximum elevation of the neck — the height the head should not exceed. They are not "adjusted" in the same way as regular reins; they only come under tension when the horse raises its neck above a deliberately chosen point. The head-neck angle must remain open; running reins are not intended to bring the horse onto the bit.
