- The leverage of the bit can be increased depending on the rein position across 3 possible levels.
- The Pessoa bit encourages a higher head carriage in horses that tend to lean on the forehand. The bit's action can be adjusted by positioning the reins on different rings — the lowest ring gives the strongest action.
- It is also possible to use coupling reins and attach them to two of the three rings.
More experienced riders can also use four reins, allowing greater flexibility in adjusting the bit's action.
