Jump'In - Twisted Pelham Elevator Bit with Port
- Rings: 70 mm
- Mouthpiece thickness: 12 mm
Usage
- A relatively strong action combining the Pelham's leverage effect on the cervical vertebrae and curb chain, along with the elevator's rebalancing action, encouraging the horse to shift its weight onto the hindquarters.
- The slim mouthpiece combined with the twist and central port makes it easier for horses to respect the bit and gives the rider greater control.
- This mouthpiece should not be used by inexperienced riders — it is recommended for confident amateurs or professionals only.
- This bit is designed for horses that are heavy on the forehand and tend to lean strongly on the hand. The aim is to encourage the horse to lift its withers and shift its weight onto the hindquarters. Of course, this rebalancing effect can only be achieved if the horse has sufficient back muscle and suppleness. It should therefore be avoided on young horses or those that are not yet physically prepared.
- The bit is attached to the bridle via sliding rope cheekpieces that fit through two slots on the rings. The elevator cheekpieces act on the poll through the bridle's headpiece.
- This bit requires a sensitive hand, as it often encourages the horse to overbend. It is therefore reserved for experienced riders.
- The Pelham bit is often recommended for better control of strong, forward-going horses. It tends to have a lowering effect when the reins are attached to the lower ring, and a slightly lifting effect when attached to the larger ring.
The longer the shanks, the greater the leverage effect.
The Pelham can be used with 2 or 4 reins. It can also be used without a curb chain to soften its action on the mouth.
A leather curb strap can be used as an alternative to the metal curb chain.
