Jump'In - Flat Pelham Bit Short Shanks
- Rings: 45 mm
- Mouthpiece thickness: 30 mm
Use
- Acts on the horse's balance, encouraging it to rebalance and shift its weight onto the hindquarters.
- Requires specific bridle cheekpieces
- The larger the rings, the stronger the lifting action
- The ports help channel and assist with steering
- Can be used direct on elevator cheekpieces, with roundings, or with four reins
- Short shanks for a lighter lever action
- The flat mouthpiece rotates 90°, providing a wide area of contact while freeing the tongue and lying flat in the mouth
- Can be severe under strong action, especially when ridden direct
- The pelham bit is often recommended for better control of strong, forward-going horses. It tends to have a lowering effect when the reins are attached to the bottom ring, and a slightly lifting effect when attached to the large ring.
- The longer the shanks, the stronger the leverage effect.
The pelham can be used with 2 or 4 reins. It can also be used without a curb chain to soften its action on the mouth.
You can also use a leather strap as a replacement for the metal curb chain.
