Allows a double action with just one pair of reins
The pelham bit is often recommended for strong, hot-blooded horses that need a little more control. It tends to have a lowering effect when the reins are attached to the lower ring, and a slightly raising effect when attached to the larger ring.
The longer the shanks, the greater the leverage effect.
The pelham can be used with 2 or 4 reins. It is also possible to use it without a curb chain to soften its action on the mouth.
A leather strap can also be used in place of the metal curb chain.
