The shanks have an extremely low lever effect as there is no offset between the nosepiece and the curb chain.
The nosepiece can be covered with a nasaline, vetrap, or other materials to soften the contact.

Clean with fresh water from time to time, and occasionally oil the noseband and curb chain.
