• The pelham bit is often recommended for better control of strong, hot-blooded horses. It tends to have a lowering effect when the reins are attached to the lower ring, and a slightly lifting effect when attached to the larger rings.
• The longer the shanks, the greater the leverage effect.
  The pelham can be used with 2 or 4 reins. It can also be used without a curb chain to soften its action on the mouth.
  A leather strap can be used as an alternative to the metal curb chain.
