The Pessoa bit encourages a higher head carriage in horses that tend to lean on the forehand. The bit's strength can be adjusted by choosing where the reins are attached to the rings — the lower ring position gives the strongest action.
It is also possible to use connectors and attach them to two of the three rings.
More experienced riders can also use four reins, allowing for greater control over the bit's strength settings.
