• The pelham bit is often recommended for stronger, more forward-going horses with a bit of blood. It tends to have a lowering effect when the reins are attached to the lower ring, and a slightly raising effect when attached to the large ring.

  The pelham can be used with 2 or 4 reins. It can also be used without a curb chain to soften its action on the mouth.
  A leather strap can also be used as a replacement for the metal curb chain.
