Match your horse's look
A saddle pad is far more than a decorative accessory. It protects your horse's back from friction, distributes the pressure of the saddle, absorbs sweat, and ensures optimal support suited to the horse's conformation. A poor-quality pad can cause pain, irritation, or muscle tension. Choosing the right model is both an act of care and an aesthetic choice. Quality saddle pads also incorporate grip and cushioning technologies to keep the saddle stable even during intense movement.
Each equestrian discipline calls for a specific cut and set of features. Dressage pads — long and straight with embroidered edges — are designed for dressage saddles: their cut distributes pressure evenly and offers a classic elegance in the arena. Jumping (CSO) pads, short and anatomical, provide maximum freedom of movement over fences while keeping the saddle stable at the withers. Hunter pads, elegant and short, prioritize classic aesthetics while allowing great freedom of movement — ideal for shows and training where refinement and style matter. Trail and endurance pads, thicker and more robust, combine comfort, breathability, and cushioning for long rides outdoors, with some models featuring practical pockets. Western pads, thicker and often adorned with traditional patterns, deliver optimal comfort for ranch work or leisure riding. For warmer seasons, breathable mesh pads are particularly popular. The collection also includes bareback pads, non-slip pads, and pony-sized models for smaller horses.
The choice of material depends on use and season. Cotton, natural and breathable, absorbs moisture well and is perfectly suited for everyday use. Polyester, lightweight and quick-drying, is ideal for regular or intensive use. Mesh and airflow fabrics promote air circulation and regulate back temperature to prevent overheating — especially appreciated in summer. Gel provides superior cushioning by effectively absorbing impact, ideal for sensitive horses or disciplines involving repeated jumping. Foam combines lightness and comfort with good saddle stability. Sheepskin and suede, popular in dressage, jumping, and western, offer luxurious comfort and reduce pressure points. Some models also feature non-slip grip to ensure a stable saddle position.
Saddle pad size is crucial: a pad that is too short will allow the girth to rub directly against the horse's skin, while one that is too long will restrict shoulder movement. The horse's conformation also plays a key role. For a prominent wither, choose a pad with sufficient wither clearance to avoid any compression. For a broad or stocky back, an anatomical or ergonomic model will better follow the horse's contours. For a hollow or narrow back, a lightly padded pad with foam or gel inserts will compensate for any irregularities. For a horse or cob, choose horse size; for a pony under 1m35–1m40, pony size is recommended. The thickness of the pad should also be matched to the saddle used, to avoid creating any imbalance.
At OHLALA Sellerie, we carry collections from the most respected names in the industry: LeMieux, Kentucky Horsewear, Equestrian Stockholm, Eskadron, Cavalleria Toscana, Equithème, Harcour, Paddock, GEM, Jump'In, Horseware, Riding World, Lami-cell, TdeT, Veredus, and Samshield — all recognized for their craftsmanship, innovation, and design. Our saddle pads are available in classic colours (black, white, beige, navy, burgundy) as well as on-trend shades (powder pink, sage green, mustard, purple, emerald, chocolate, and more) to suit every personal style.
To extend the life of your saddle pad, wash it regularly following the manufacturer's instructions, air-dry it away from any direct heat source, and brush off hair and sand to maintain its breathability. A well-cared-for pad retains its cushioning and comfort properties for years.
