Les trois piliers de l’harmonie à cheval : la technique, le mental et le physique 🔥

The Three Pillars of Harmony in Riding: Technique, Mindset & Fitness 🔥

ExercicesNov 29, 20256 min

Harmony in the saddle doesn't happen by chance.

It is built on three fundamental pillars: technique, mindset and physical fitness. Three essential, inseparable elements — and equally indispensable for both horse and rider 💪

These three pillars are the foundations that shape everything: the quality of your aids, the fluidity of your communication and the trust that builds with each session.

What if we took a moment to go a little deeper?
In this article, Alexia Pitier, dressage rider, explains how these three key areas are built, how they shape your progress… and above all, how to work on them concretely every day 😉

🐴 Technique

Technical preparation in equestrian sport: an essential foundation for progress in the saddle

Technical preparation relies above all on quality coaching and a supportive outside eye. It is this professional perspective that enables progress, builds solid foundations and allows the work to be adjusted at the right moment.

Consistency and follow-through are essential to moving in the right direction, while respecting the level and pace of progress of both horse and rider.

In technical preparation, the goal is always to follow the dressage training scale. This essential framework takes into account the horse's age, physique, level of education and learning capacity. Nothing can be built without solid foundations: each step prepares the next 😊

We begin with rhythm, seeking regular, balanced and tension-free paces 😉

From there, we develop suppleness and relaxation, essential for the horse to use its body in a harmonious way. This natural relaxation then leads to quality of contact — a steady, soft and trusting contact that allows for more precise work.

Thanks to these first three pillars, we can establish true impulsion, born from hindquarter engagement rather than speed. This impulsion, combined with straightness, channels energy, directs it along the axis and brings the horse toward better use of its body.

All these steps together finally open the door to the collection, the pinnacle of the training scale. The collection develops balance, power and lightness, and prepares the most technical movements in dressage 🤩

This training scale (rhythm, suppleness and relaxation, contact, impulsion, straightness and collection) forms the essential foundation for developing the horse technically, approaching lateral work, improving balance, engaging the hindquarters more, and allowing the horse to progress in a healthy and sustainable way 💪

The role of the coach, trainer or professional rider is to support this progression. Whatever the level, having an outside eye is essential — to correct mistakes quickly, prevent bad habits from setting in, understand what is happening in both the horse's and the rider's body, and adapt the work to each horse's individual personality.

Because it is through consistency, precision and respect for each step that solid technique is built… and above all, a horse that is comfortable in its body and mind, ready to progress.

🔥 Mindset

A horse that is mentally well, listened to, understood and mentally prepared, is a true asset. In the same way, the rider must learn to manage their emotions, stay the course and set clear goals — whether focused on leisure or competition.

We must always strive to be the best version of ourselves for our horses, because our state of mind directly influences their confidence and their balance.

Rider:

Mental preparation is essential for progress, both in sport and in everyday life.

In riding, it holds an even more special place, because it directly influences our horse, our decisions, our relationship, our feel and our performance 😱

The areas of application for mental preparation are many, and approaches vary depending on the professional and the rider's individual needs.

But the goal always remains the same: to build a strong, stable and adaptable mindset. With the right support, we work on:

emotional management, essential for staying calm, clear-headed and consistent with your horse;

self-confidence and self-esteem, two pillars that influence every action in the saddle;
inner dialogue, that little voice that can lift us up… or hold us back;
motivation, to stay the course despite the obstacles;

performance routines, which help you prepare effectively before a training session or competition;

focus, essential for staying connected to your horse;

visualisation, a powerful tool for preparing body and mind before performing an exercise;

✨ and goal management, which helps structure progress over time. Mental preparation is not reserved for elite performance.

Whether you are a leisure rider or a competitive one, it forms an essential foundation for moving forward with confidence, understanding your own reactions better and becoming more consistent in your riding.

Because in our sport, mindset influences everything: our posture, our decisions, our energy… and how our horse feels. Working on your mindset means working on the quality of the partnership, technical progress, but also the joy of learning and growing day by day. 🥰

Horse :

To develop a horse's mental resilience, you must first honour three essential foundations for its wellbeing. These are the pillars of a strong mindset:

☀️ Friends — the social bond with other horses;

☀️ Freedom — the ability to go out, move around and express themselves outdoors every day;

☀️ Forage — ad lib roughage: grass, hay, a natural and regular diet.

Once these essential needs are met, you can develop the horse's connection and mental resilience through groundwork, using clear cues that give the horse a sense of security. Everything established on the ground carries over to the saddle.

But also, creating a stable environment is essential: horses love routine — it reassures them and builds their trust in their rider. And varying the work, adapting what you offer, taking their personality into account… all of this allows the horse to thrive, stay motivated, curious and confident. »

💪 Physical fitness

Physical preparation: essential for both rider and horse. Finally, physical conditioning is just as essential for progressing in the saddle.

For the horse

The horse must stay active, mobile and work in a way adapted to its needs, with full respect for its physical integrity. Consistency, attentiveness and progressive training are the keys to a healthy, high-performing body.

Physical conditioning for the horse naturally complements technical work. A horse that stays active every day — walking, going out, moving — keeps its muscles ready to work. Variety in exercises is just as important: alternating postures, working on balance, transitions, stretching… helps engage the full musculature. The more a horse goes out, the more its body adapts, strengthens and builds muscle naturally 💪

A thorough walk warm-up before each session is essential: it prepares the joints, tendons and muscles, and puts the horse in a good physical frame of mind. The ultimate goal is a horse that is supple, balanced and always ready to move 🤩

For the rider

The rider, too, must maintain their physical condition. Riding alone is not enough: you also need to work on your own body to find a balance between suppleness and core strength. Proprioception plays a key role: in the saddle, it is necessary to dissociate each part of the body in order to use it more effectively and, ultimately, become one with your horse.

The idea is to build core strength, stretch regularly and develop your flexibility. Activities like swimming, yoga or Pilates are excellent complements to keep your body supple, balanced and able to move in harmony with your horse 🥰

In conclusion,

Preparing the horse-and-rider partnership rests on three inseparable pillars: technique, mindset and physical fitness.
Technique builds solid foundations and establishes precision, straightness and impulsion. Mental preparation fosters focus, confidence and harmony between rider and horse. Finally, physical conditioning ensures a supple, balanced and responsive body — for both horse and rider.

By working consistently and progressively on these three pillars, you lay the foundations for an equestrian practice that is harmonious, high-performing and sustainable. The balance between these pillars is the key to developing a happy, confident and healthy horse-and-rider partnership.

A good warm-up before the session is also essential: it wakes up the muscles and helps you become more aware of every part of your body once in the saddle.
