🌱 "The day I understood that cross-country is a conversation… not a challenge"

I think we've all been there: that moment when you approach a cross-country fence, the ditch looks so much wider than you remembered, and your horse is busy watching the birds, wondering whether flying might just be easier.

At 7 years old, I still remember my first step down. I was so nervous I asked my coach:

— "Do I have to?"
— "No… but we're already on our way."

Too late. We jumped. Well… he jumped, and I mostly tried to survive.

And yet, today it's become one of my favourite feelings: the boldness, that moment of impulsion where your horse virtually whispers "don't worry, I've got this", and that steady canter that makes you feel like you're dancing with the terrain. That's what real cross-country is: a sport built on trust, connection and communication.

With this masterclass dedicated to cross-country training, I want to share with you a complete session — simple, progressive and above all FUN — to work on:

  • boldness,

  • canter rhythm,

  • managing natural terrain challenges,

  • and the dialogue between horse and rider.

👉 You never "force" a horse to become bold cross-country: you build their confidence step by step, with well-suited exercises and a logical progression.

Since then, I've developed a go-to session that I use with my own horses as well as my students', from grassroots to amateur level. Simple, progressive, fun… and above all incredibly effective for improving your cross-country.

I'm sharing it with you today 🧡


🔶 Exercise 1 — Tackling technical profiles… without the drama!

Goal: set your horse up for success and build genuine confidence cross-country.

We start small: a little log, a brush fence, a small step down. The idea isn't to test his courage, but to tell him: "Look, this is easy. You and I've got this."

👉 What you should feel: a steady canter, no rushing, an attentive horse who looks where he's going but stays connected to you.

We gradually combine two cross-country profiles:

  • log ➝ ditch

  • ditch ➝ small step down

  • step up ➝ hedge

Nothing too demanding — just enough to teach him to link fences without stress and without losing focus, while building his boldness over technical profiles.

✨ Tip: keep your eyes up and looking ahead, not down at the fence. The fence is for your horse — the line is for you.

 

🔶 Exercise 2 — Mastering balance on uneven terrain

Goal: a steady horse that doesn't "slam on the brakes" on the way down.

Changes in terrain are a bit like life: it goes up, it goes down… and it tests your balance just as much as your horse's.

We start at trot, up a gentle slope and then down a small descent. Then we move to canter, always with the same intention:

➡️ Uphill: stay engaged through your core, weight in your stirrups.
➡️ Downhill: don't collapse onto your shoulders — sit slightly back.

👉 Simple exercise: Trot downhill ➝ canter transition at the bottom ➝ back up.

A perfect exercise to wake up your horse's brain… and sometimes the rider's too!

🎯 The goal: keep your horse available, steady, and understanding that the terrain is part of cross-country work.

 

🔶 Exercise 3 — Direction lines: the focus school

Goal: a straight, focused and truly attentive horse.

The challenge: keeping your line from start to finish, without your horse deciding to investigate a nearby bush or improvise a little choreography. This exercise is also ideal for starting to work on angled jumps.

For this exercise, you can set up foam poles, flags or even small cones to help guide you.

👉 Line ➝ direction ➝ stability: the winning trio in cross-country.

Variation: Direction line ➝ small step down ➝ return on a straight line.

With this exercise, you combine precision + balance + calmness. Simple concepts… but remarkably effective.


🎯 Conclusion

This session is designed to be adaptable: club horse, amateur, young horse or experienced horse — everyone can progress at their own pace.

The essentials always stay the same:

We build boldness — we don't demand it.
We aim for rhythm, not speed.
We keep smiling, even when your horse decides the ditch looks very suspicious.

With these three exercises, you'll develop a horse that is more confident, straighter and steadier, and above all a partnership that truly enjoys cross-country.
