4 exercises to improve the precision of your track on horseback 💪

Whether you're a leisure rider or a competitor, the precision of your lines is a key element of your progress 🔥 A fluid and controlled line not only improves the balance and suppleness of your horse, but also the connection between you both.

Discover 4 simple yet effective exercises to sharpen your precision, improve your horse's responsiveness and gain more control. Whether you're looking to perfect your turns, your transitions, or better anticipate your lines, these exercises will help you progress session after session.

The triangle 🔺

The aim here is to ride through every side of the triangle, which requires a solid mastery of your lines.

📏 Setup: 3 poles arranged in a triangle shape — make sure there is 3m between the apex and the base!

To get comfortable with the exercise, start by approaching from the base of the triangle towards the apex, first at trot then at canter.

You can then continue by riding along each side with a pass through the centre of the triangle at canter, asking for a transition once you've cleared the triangle, then repeating with a trot pass.

Finally, you can ride through the triangle at canter this time from the apex towards the middle of the pole. Approaching from the top will truly test your control of direction, boldness, and straightness.

✨ Top tips for nailing this exercise:

👉 Adjust your horse's pace (rhythm and stride length) as you ride through the exercise

👉 Work your turn carefully to arrive at the exercise straight and balanced

The clover ☘️

It involves linking small fences separated by circles. These circles help maintain your horse's balance and work on consistency of rhythm.

📏 Setup: 4 poles placed on a 15–20m circle

You can ride this clover exercise with ground poles, cavalettis or small fences.

This exercise is great for both rider and horse when it comes to refining lines. It can also be used for horses that tend to rush at fences, helping to settle and focus them.

✨ Top tip for nailing this exercise:

Don't hesitate, especially at first, to come back to trot between the poles!

The S-jumps ⚡️

📏 Setup: Two ground poles / cavalettis along the track and one on a diagonal across the width.

Start by working through this exercise at trot over three poles on the ground to refine your lines. You can then move to canter, replace the poles with cavalettis, and finally progress to fences. The goal is to perfect your lines and the fluidity of your turns, while adjusting your horse's stride length and keeping him active. Throughout the sequence, always make sure you're on the correct lead to avoid false turns.

You can vary this exercise by adding trot-canter-trot transitions.

Before attempting this variation, make sure you have mastered variation no. 1. Here, you approach the first fence in an active trot. On landing, maintain the canter to the second fence, then come back to trot before the last fence. This sequence helps you work on the precision of your transitions while keeping your horse focused and attentive.

🔍 Key points to watch

👉 Keep a soft hand and perfect balance to ride the transitions well.

👉 Adjust your line and stride length according to the turn, while keeping your horse active.

👉 This exercise can be demanding for your horse — don't do too many repetitions to avoid tiring him out.

The diagonal poles 🧡

📏 Setup: Place your poles in a straight line with 2.8m to 3.3m between the centres of your poles.

In the first variation, you'll work on your horse's straightness by riding through in a straight line each time, always making sure you're centred over the poles. A real coordination challenge that keeps your horse focused and balanced.

This second variation helps you work on manoeuvrability and the precision of your lines. At first, be careful not to make your circles too small, and always keep in mind that you should be straight before and after crossing the pole — only turn once you've passed it. It's a perfect exercise for a horse that tends to rush at fences.

Both variations can be ridden at trot or canter, and with ground poles or cavalettis, giving you plenty of ways to vary the difficulty.

✨ Top tips for nailing this exercise:

👉 Make sure your horse doesn't increase his rhythm as he goes through the exercise.

👉 You can add cones to be even more precise.
