At OHLALA, we know that every horse is unique… and so is every partnership.
To help you make the right choices, here is a simple, clear and 100% OHLALA Lovers guide covering the most commonly used bits and their actions.
The main types of bits and their effects
1. The loose ring snaffle (simple bit)
The most classic and versatile bit.
Its action depends mainly on mouthpiece thickness:
-
thin mouthpieces: stronger action
-
thick mouthpieces: softer action
👉 Suitable for most horses, perfect for everyday use.

2. The eggbutt snaffle
Stable, comfortable, and often better tolerated by sensitive horses.
It prevents pinching and is very well suited to horses with sensitive mouth corners.

3. Needle cheek bits and the Verdun bit
Ideal for steering and directional control.
Often used for:
-
young horses,
-
horses lacking stability,
-
or to prevent pinching.
The Verdun is slightly softer than needle cheek bits, while still providing directional stability.

4. The Baucher bit
A precise bit with a subtle lever effect that encourages poll flexion.
Perfect for horses that need a little more structure, without moving to a stronger bit.

5. The Pessoa bit
Designed for horses that lean heavily or work too much on the forehand.
Its action depends on rein placement: the lower the reins, the stronger the action.
Can be used:
-
with two pairs of reins,
-
or with roundings.

6. The Pelham bit
The Pelham is a combination bit, combining snaffle action and curb action. Here is an accurate description:
-
The upper ring (also called the top ring or main ring) is where the main rein is attached: it acts like a standard bit, with a slight poll-raising effect depending on the pressure.
-
The lower ring is where the Pelham rein (usually a second pair of reins) is attached: it creates a lever effect that lowers the head and helps to control a powerful or forward-going horse.
-
Bear in mind that the lever effect depends on the length of the shanks: the longer they are, the stronger the action.
-
It can be used with a curb chain, two reins or roundings.

7. The gag bit
Designed for horses that work too low or lean on the hand.
It must be used with specific cheekpieces, which are essential for correct use.

8. The double bridle
The double bridle bit is a tool of advanced precision, used primarily in dressage. It typically combines a simple snaffle and a curb bit to allow a differentiated action: finesse on the snaffle and frame or leverage on the curb. This dual action offers exceptional control and precision, but requires a very experienced, steady and light hand. It is reserved for horses that are already well-schooled and responsive to the rider's aids.

9. The hackamore
A bit… with no action in the mouth.
It acts on the nose with a lever effect depending on the length of the shanks.
Often chosen for horses that are sensitive in the mouth or need control without direct contact.

Choosing a bit is first and foremost about your horse's comfort, their level of training, and the softness of your hands.
Every partnership is different — what matters is finding the balance that works for you both.
