SNAFFLE, SNAFFLE BRIDLE, BRIDLE β WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Among the questions that come up very frequently in our FAQs, here is one that was long overdue for an answer: "What is the difference between a double bridle, a snaffle bridle, and a bridle?" β‘οΈ Good news β as always, it's really very simple π
Let's start with the basics β snaffle and bridle are synonyms! The "technical term" for this piece of tack is the bridle, but in everyday riding conversation, the word snaffle is just as commonly used.
So, what exactly is a snaffle bridle? It is an essential piece of a horse's working equipment. Usually made of leather, you can also find synthetic versions. It sits on the horse's head, resting on the poll, and allows for a single bit to be fitted. The bit is the key element that creates a connection and enables communication between the horse's mouth (more precisely, the corners of the lips) and the rider's hand π¬
The key difference between a snaffle and a double bridle is simply the number of bits that can be fitted to the bridle. Here, it is possible to fit two bits on dedicated cheekpieces. β οΈ : Please note, the adjustment of these is absolutely crucial and deserves special attention!
But why use two bits in our horses' mouths, you might ask? This comes down to the pursuit of precision, balance and collection for experienced riders and horses that have progressed sufficiently in their training towards the correct outline and high school movements. Here, the double bridle allows for interplay between a "lifting" effect from the bradoon and a "lowering" effect from the curb bit. It's quite common to see this bridle used by dressage riders, though it can also be spotted β much more rarely β in show jumping. We must emphasise strongly that the double bridle is not suitable for every rider's hands, nor for every horse's mouth.
