A full locker clear-out: starting fresh so you never lose anything again
Has your headcollar been missing for 3 weeks and the mane brush made itself at home in the medicine box? Time for a proper sort-out. ♻️
A well-organised tack locker isn't just about looks. It saves you time before every ride, keeps your equipment lasting longer, and takes the stress out of your daily routine. So, just like throwing open the windows in spring to air out the house — fling open that locker door and start fresh.
The rider's spring clean: why now? 🧹
Spring is the perfect time to take stock. Winter leaves its mark: piled-up rugs, damp equipment stuffed away carelessly, half-empty care products accumulating on the shelf… Before heading back to competitions or stepping up training, it's worth getting back to basics.
And let's be honest — a cluttered locker costs you money. Poorly stored equipment gets damaged. You waste time searching for things that should be within reach in 10 seconds.
💡 Tip: Take a photo of your locker before you start. It'll serve as your "before/after" to keep you motivated, and help you see objectively what was taking up too much space.
📦 Step 1: the big clear-out (no mercy)
The golden rule of tidying applies at the yard too: take everything out, sort it, then put it back. No simply shuffling things from one shelf to another.
1 — Empty the locker completely Place everything on the floor or a bench. Yes, everything — including what's lurking in the corners. It's the only way to get a clear picture of what you actually own.
2 — Create three categories "Keep" (in good condition, used regularly), "Repair / clean" (leather to condition, rug to resew…), "Donate / throw away". Be honest with yourself! 🙄
3 — Clean the empty locker. Take the opportunity to wipe down the shelves with a damp cloth, disinfect if needed, and let it air out. A clean locker makes you want to keep it that way. 🧽
💡 Tip: Note the purchase date or last use of your safety equipment (hat, body protector). A riding hat should be replaced every 5 years or after any impact, even with no visible damage.
🏇 Step 2: organise by zones, like a pro
The secret to a locker that stays tidy? A place for everything, and everything in its place. Divide the space into logical zones based on how often things are used and what they are.
Upper zone: headwear & accessories 🤠
Bridles, headcollars, reins, snaffle bits… everything that goes on your horse's head deserves a proper home. A bridle rack fixed to the wall or locker door keeps your bridle hanging in shape and saves a surprising amount of space.
→ Hippotonic Plastic-Coated Bridle Rack — Perfect for hanging bridles and headcollars neatly. The plastic coating protects the leather. Available in a plain version or a decorative horse-head design.
→ The "All-in-one Hook": Lyour ideal everyday ally for keeping your kit perfectly organised. Practical and easy to fix, it lets you hang bridles, headcollars, lead ropes or even your personal belongings within easy reach — at the yard, at a competition, or at home.
→ The Grooming Deluxe Bridle Rack : a true must-have for a tack room that's organised in style. Made from durable materials — bamboo or steel depending on the model — it lets you hang multiple bridles or headcollars while keeping each piece of equipment neatly in place and easy to reach. The extra hooks are perfect for lead ropes, martingales or accessories, while its refined design adds a genuine premium touch to your space. The ideal balance of practicality and elegance for a smoother yard routine.
💡 Tip: Roll your reins into a loop and tuck them through the headpiece before hanging the bridle. They'll stay neat and won't get tangled with your neighbour's tack.
Central zone: the saddle and its accessories
Your saddle is your most valuable piece of equipment. It should be stored horizontally, well ventilated, and away from moisture. A saddle trolley or wall-mounted rack is essential to avoid distorting the tree.
→ Grooming Deluxe - Saddle Rack with Numnah Support: Its sturdy frame holds your saddle securely, while the integrated support lets you dry or store your numnah alongside it.
→ Hippotonic - Portable Saddle Stand: the ultimate practical accessory to take everywhere — at the yard or at a competition. Lightweight, foldable and easy to set up, it lets you rest your saddle safely while keeping your kit close at hand. Its sturdy frame ensures great stability and protects your equipment every day.
→ Hippotonic - Removable Saddle Rack: with its 2 independent arms, it's the ideal accessory for keeping your kit organised — at the yard or at a competition. Hang your saddle and numnah separately for better ventilation, better protection, and gear that's always ready to go. Easy to fit and remove, it adapts to any space and moves in seconds.
→ Hippotonic Saddle Trolleys Easy to move when your locker is far from the grooming area or at a competition, they let you transport all your kit in one trip: saddle, numnah, bridle and accessories all find their place. Their sturdy frame ensures great stability even when fully loaded, while the integrated supports keep your equipment organised and protected.

💡 Tip: Always run your stirrup leathers up and place the irons in the travelling position after every ride. It protects the saddle flap and prevents accidents.
For your numnahs: the Canter saddle pad holder is a must-have for keeping your kit organised and well aired every day. Designed to hold your saddle pads after use, it allows optimal drying while preventing creases and moisture build-up. Its simple, sturdy, and practical structure fits easily into any tack room or grooming area.
Lower zone: leg protection
Boots, bandages, bell boots, fetlock boots… everything that goes on your horse's legs can be grouped together in labelled bins or baskets. You'll save so much time never having to rummage.
✨ Step 3: tips to make it last
Getting organised is great. Staying organised is even better. The goal is simple: after each session, putting everything away should take no more than 5 minutes. If it takes longer, something in your system isn't quite working yet.
🏷️ Label everything Bins, baskets, shelves… a few small labels (even handwritten ones) make a huge difference.
📅 Monthly check Once a month, take 10 minutes to check the condition of your equipment: leather that needs conditioning, Velcro that needs cleaning, care products that need topping up. Far less painful than a full annual sort-out!
🥾 Bonus: your boots deserve proper storage too
We often think about storing the horse's tack… but the rider's kit is just as important. Boots, hat, body protector, half chaps… they all need space and the right storage conditions.
→ Boot bags: the essential for transporting and protecting your kit every day. Boot bags, hat bags or storage bags — they keep your things organised, clean and easy to access, at the yard or at a competition.
→ Boot trees: essential for keeping your riding boots in shape. They prevent creases and distortion while extending the life of your boots. A simple but indispensable accessory for keeping your boots looking impeccable ✨🐴
🌿 Conclusion: a spotless locker for a brilliant season
Organising your tack locker isn't a chore — it's an investment. In your equipment, your time, and your peace of mind at the yard. With the right storage solutions and a few simple habits, you can turn a chaotic space into a little corner that's truly yours: functional, tidy, and a pleasure to use.
And the best part? When you open that locker the next morning, everything will be exactly where you left it. Promise. ❤️
