The guide to dry shampoos for horses in winter
Winter has its perks — we say goodbye to flies — but it also has its downsides… including mud, grass and sand stains that seem to end up everywhere on our horses, especially on greys 🥲 But don't worry, we're here to help you clean your horses quickly and effectively, even in the coldest weather ❄️
When temperatures drop close to zero, bathing becomes a risky business 🥶 The solution? Dry shampoos, perfect for removing stains from manes and coats without rinsing. The results are impressive and you'll quickly be hooked — they'll become an essential part of your grooming kit 🧴
Three types of dry shampoo to discover
1️⃣ Sprays 💨
Very easy to use:
-
Spray onto the stain to be treated
-
Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes
-
Wipe off with a clean, dry cloth
For stubborn stains, you can repeat the process twice.
Our favourite: Easy White by Veredus
Tested on the white markings of our horses and on the hindquarters of a grey covered in bedding, the result is incredible: after just two applications, the stain disappears completely 🤯
2️⃣ Mousses 🧼
Ideal for horses sensitive to the sound of sprays ✨
-
Silent and easy to apply
-
Works on the same principle as the spray
Our verdict: Easy Shine Mousse by Ravene
Effective on a nervous horse, a pleasure to apply and with a scent we absolutely love 🔐
3️⃣ Powders 🌈
-
Similar application to sprays and mousses
-
Suited to your preferences and those of your horse
You'll find for example the Ekin coat and mane stain remover or the Jackpot Dry Powder Stain-Removing Shampoo by Compagnons & Cie — both absolute favourites of ours 🔥
And because you say it best:
Customer review on the Ekin stain remover: "Effectiveness depends on the coat type and length! As a dry shampoo for the mane in winter, it's brilliant… For everything else, very happy!" – Customer review 2019
💡 Bonus: these dry shampoos can also be used on dogs 🐶 such as the Nellumbo Moisturising Foaming Powder Shampoo for Dogs
4️⃣ Pumice stones 🔥
For small, heavily soiled areas such as slightly muddy patches, a pumice stone is a practical and natural ally.
-
Gently brush through dry coat to remove dirt and dandruff
-
Ideal for grey or white horses, who get dirty quickly
-
Avoid rubbing too hard to prevent skin irritation
A pumice stone can complement your winter grooming routine!
