Build a unique bond with your horse through massage 🐴✨
What better way to deepen your bond with your horse than through massage sessions that also bring him daily well-being?
We welcomed Élodie, founder of Alodis Care and professional equine massage therapist, to help us put together this comprehensive guide covering all the fundamentals of equine massage.
🗝️ The 3 essential keys to equine massage
1. Observe 👀
Before you begin, take a moment to observe your horse: his posture, his mood, the way he holds himself. This step helps you better understand his body and read the signals he's sending you.
With time, your eye will naturally become more trained. But when starting out, you can refer to anatomical charts (muscles and bones) to better visualise the areas you're working on.
2. Touch 🤲
Now it's time to get closer and place your hands on your horse's body. By gently palpating different areas, you'll be able to detect tension, warm spots, or areas that may be causing discomfort. This step is essential for tailoring your massage technique accordingly.
3. Understand 🧠
Throughout the session, stay attuned to your horse.
Pay close attention to his head, the position of his ears, the expression in his eyes, and any signs of relaxation. These cues will be your greatest guide for adjusting the pressure and rhythm of the massage. Stay equally aware of the connection you're building with him, so nothing goes unnoticed.
🌿 The benefits of horse massage
Equine massage offers many benefits, both physical and mental. It supports muscle comfort, tension relief, better recovery and a stronger horse-rider connection.
🔥 The steps of a complete massage
For a complete session, Élodie recommends starting with a digestive massage using Digest Récup oil, around the girth area and behind the ribs. This helps identify any digestive discomfort.
In horses, this type of discomfort can affect their energy, focus and performance, while also impacting their overall well-being (pain, stress, behavioural issues). It's therefore an essential point to check.
Whatever the area, here are the 5 essential steps of a horse massage:
1️⃣ Place a small amount of oil in the palm of your hand, let your horse smell it, then warm it between your hands.
2️⃣ Apply the oil to the area to be massaged: it begins to work from that moment.
3️⃣ Open the muscle fibres by making large circles with a flat hand (3 times).
4️⃣ Perform your massage using the chosen technique.
5️⃣ Close the fibres with the same circular movements, smoothing the area gently.
✨ Two essential aspects to know
Fascia work
But first, what exactly are fascia?
They are membranes that surround and connect all the structures of the body: muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels and organs. They form a continuous web. When tension appears somewhere, it can lead to restrictions in mobility elsewhere. Manual techniques on the fascia (superficial or deep) allow these tensions to be released effectively.
Trigger points
These are the famous "knots" that block certain movements and can cause pain when pressure is applied.
To work on them:
-
Warm up the area with circular movements, following the direction of the coat and lymphatic circulation.
-
First gentle pressure: 5 seconds, light pressure → release for 5 seconds
-
Second moderate pressure: 10 seconds, normal pressure → release for 5 seconds
-
Third firm pressure: 15 seconds
-
Close the area with gentle massage strokes.
