They are much longer than regular reins, running from the girth, through the bit rings, and up into the rider's hands. The fixed attachment is at the chest strap (or on either side of the saddle). The reins therefore slide through the bit rings — either when the rider adjusts their length or when the horse moves its head.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eWhen correctly fitted, they define the maximum height to which the neck can be raised — the point the head should not exceed. They are not \"adjusted\" in the same way as regular reins; they only come under tension when the horse raises its neck above a deliberately chosen point.
