So, if it needs it, YES ... But how? That's a very good question 🤔
First thing, let's try to understand the characteristics of blankets.
- The weight provides information about the warmth emitted by the blanket: at 0g it provides no warmth (like a sheet for example, which will act as a windbreaker without keeping the unclipped horse warm) and the higher you go in weights, the warmer the blanket will be 🔥

- The deniers represent the "resistance of the blanket". The denser the material, the more deniers increase, and the less likely your blanket is to tear. Therefore, a blanket with low deniers is recommended when horses live in stalls with little chance of damaging the material, or if the blanket will serve as an underlayer and thus be protected. Conversely, for a horse in a pasture and in a herd, or as a "last layer", you should not skimp on the number of deniers; the more resistant the blanket, the less you will have to sew/replace the famous blanket repeatedly!

The key to successfully adapting blankets to our horses is the onion technique: let's multiply the layers! 🧅
The idea here is to be able to use several blankets at the same time and to vary the combos based on several factors :
- My horse is not clipped: so why not put on a 0g but waterproof blanket to protect against the rain?
- It gets very cold at night and quite warm during the day? So we don’t hesitate to slip an extra layer under my main blanket at night!
- My horse lives in a stable at night and outdoors during the day? So we can definitely opt for a stable blanket at night, on top of which we add a full denier blanket with a neck cover, tail flap (which protects from the wind), and shoulder gussets (for free movement)...
- During the ride? Don’t forget the quarter sheet during warm-up and after the ride: is it cold? a fleece quarter sheet, is it raining? a waterproof quarter sheet, is it raining and cold? A polar-waterproof quarter sheet
- For Ground Work? On our side in this case, we opt without hesitation for the exercise blankets that allow perfect freedom of movement while staying well in place
In short, you will have understood, there are as many blankets as there are needs depending on your expectations! And yes, a clipped horse means a complete collection of blankets and the possibility of changing them regularly throughout the day so that our protégés are always optimally covered ❤️
